Five for Friday...Going "outside"

Summer is going way too fast! The weeks are just flying by, I really thought I would have lots of those "do nothing" days...but nope.

ONE
My daughter and I are going "outside" next week! In Alaskan speak this means we are leaving the state. It took me awhile to figure out what people were talking about when they would say that. It always cracked me up. Another way to refer to leaving is "going to the lower 48".

I'm happy to not be traveling alone this time. My daughter hasn't seen our family for a few years. The trip there and back will be more fun with company.

TWO
I am still sorting and labeling my classroom library here at home. There are more at school, but it's a start.
I made the mistake of looking at children's books when shopping at a thrift store and bought more.  I found some Pete the Cat books in hardcover! Wahoooo!

Here is one of the labels from Danielle Mastandrea at TPT.

I also found these wonderful books about famous artists!

Now I need to get matching boxes to put them in. I have a mish mesh of cardboard and plastic boxes at the moment....there are some great ideas on Pinterest! You can see my board where I am gathering them.

THREE
We are getting lots of time with our sweet grandchildren!

FOUR
Getting ready for the 4th of July.

FIVE
The yard is wild and alive!

Have a great holiday, be safe.

ESY...Summer School....Week 2

Here's what we did the second week of ESY.

Reading

Art Projects

This easy and cute turtle idea is from Glittering Muffins.

The kids were very creative! I thought they would make some dots and be done, but they made designs!

We had time to do a 2nd craft this week......

Make an island and add a palm tree. This idea is from Glued to my Crafts.

1. Read a book about the beach or an island. We read Pete the Cat at the Beach.
2. Trace and cut out both hands on green construction paper.
3. Cut about 1/3 of a paper plate off for the island. (Save the cut off piece).
4. Cut blue tissue paper into squares. Glue onto plate for the ocean.

5. Glue and sprinkle sand for the beach. Also you may glue small shells or sea stars.
6. Glue hands onto top of brown tree trunk made from brown construction paper. Trim the piece of the leftover plate and glue on the back of the tree trunk.
(You can skip this part if you use tagboard)

7. After the sand dries, staple the tree onto the plate.

Science

Materials:
Growing Sea Life characters (from Oriental Trading)
clear cups or glasses for each student
magnifying glass
Worksheet

They really studied their animals closely!
After the first day, they noticed the animals were more "spongy" feeling.

I made a little worksheet for them to use. They circled the color word and wrote what kind of animal they had picked.

They traced around it each day to see if the size was different.

This project turned out to be even more fun then I anticipated!

Other Activities

We are keeping busy at ESY and having lots of fun!

Five for Friday......November 1, 2013

Thank goodness it's Friday! It has been a very loooooonnng week! I am happy to be linking up with Doodle Bugs this week.

1.
Halloween is my favorite holiday, it is always fun to wear a costume and give away candy, but when it falls on a school night.....yuck! We did do some fun activities while practicing skills.
Graphing activity....
with candy corn and pumpkin candy.

2.

counting by 5's and 10's using cards from.......Doodle Bugs of course! The Bats are in her "Happy Halloween" packet and the pumpkins are from her "Fall Math Centers". We made the other activities into folder tasks, I forgot to take pictures, but the kids love them!

3.

Patterns using pictures from Writing with Symbols 2000....

4.

Pete the Cat in the listening center, found some great activities
on the website makinglearningfun.com.
Pete the Cat and his New White Shoes is also on youtube! Very cool on the Promethean board.

5.
This week was also Red Ribbon week and I personally feel there is a conspiracy to try to keep us Halloween fans from wearing our holiday apparel! So here are some of my highlights of the week....
Crazy Sock day

Crazy hair day ( my hair was purple and this shirt went great with it!)

Sports team day...so I wore my awesome ORANGE Thunder shirt complete with pumpkin pin, earrings and socks.

Have an  AMAZING weekend!
