Five for Friday...Link up with Doodle Bugs Teaching

Helllllooooo!

I am still on sick leave and my weeks fly by without too many events to report.
I'll do my best...here goes.....

First...there is a pretty good book I am reading.

The author, Helene Segura, has just the right balance of humor and real world helpful advice.

Second...wondering
what is going on at school, with my kids and lesson plans...

and when the doctor finally releases me...how will I EVER catch up???

Third....Cold and Snow

Fourth....Exercise!
Walking outdoors with Scooby and....

walking with Leslie Samsone....I'm up to two miles and the stretch.

It is perfect for an out of shape, on sick leave, teacher.

Fifth.....accommodation!

Purple lens glasses!
They help with the lighting that  bothers my vision-those pesky black spots followed by a headache.

and

another stress reliever......CATS

Are three cats too many?

Happy Thanksgiving!

Five for Friday...November 6, 2015

I'm not back to work yet, but I can probably pull 5 things out of my hat! My focus is on health at the moment instead of lesson plans! Lesson plans are easier I think.

Let's link up with Doodle Bugs Teaching and share your week.

This isn't exactly healthy, but it is pretty good and HALF of it IS healthy!

Pumpkin Spice Almonds and candy corn is delicious mixed together!

Taking my blood pressure 4 times a day (when I remember). The smallest thing can make it go up. My life is pretty calm at home...no big decisions are required at the moment...
I am concerned what it will do when I return to work.
and yes....I'm on medicine to help keep it down.

Two MRI appointments this week!
The second one was using contrast...I really hate needles and my veins are very uncooperative.
It only took two sticks to get the contrast in, add to that I was laying down with a plastic bird cage looking mask over my face while it was happening.
I am proud of me for not freaking out.

I found this cartoon on Google, it cracks me up because that is how it sounds! I had on headphones with music, but sadly couldn't hear the music when the machine was at  loudest which was most of the time. More MRI humor at

Here's a picture from Alter Everything blog of the face mask.

 Machine1500x375
She talks about pretending she is on a beach, I did something similar...I was sitting by a lake drinking coffee.

I am really hoping my brain has healed...but not sure I'm ready to handle the stress of my job.  : (
But ...you know...gotta work..

Speaking of handling stress....I am reading a book that may help

I am only in the first chapter. So far, there is a lot of talk about being positive about yourself, seeing the good in YOU, one of the questions: List positive things about yourself...I couldn't think of anything...I would think of something and then disagree with myself! So I have a ways to go.

We've gotten some snow and are expecting more this weekend!
I am taking a walk every day and attempting to get back in working shape--ha!

Take care and talk to you next week,

Paula

Five for Friday...Coming back around

I have been out of touch for about a month.
Here's my story:
I was in a classroom assisting some of our students. I got one of those tickles in my throat and started coughing. I decided to leave the room and get it coughed out. I got a drink of water, and the cough just exploded, my chest hurt and burned. I went into a student bathroom and into the handicap stall, eyes were watering, face red, I didn't want to scare any kids.
The tickle went away, I was wiping my eyes when my head exploded with pain. It was so sudden and hurt so bad, I almost dropped to my knees. I grabbed my head and waited for it to lesson, but it didn't, I was seeing black spots...I thought ....I better go to the nurse, then I thought...oh no, the teacher is probably wondering where I went....then...nope I better try to make it to the nurse's office. I took a breath and headed out of the bathroom (making sure I didn't hear any kids, again, I didn't want to scare anyone).
It felt like such a long distance...down the hall, up the ramp, across the lobby (it's not).
The nurse took one look and laid me down, took my blood pressure (205/something), called my husband and directed him to take me directly to the ER.
After a cat scan, an ambulance ride and a MRI, it was decided that I had ruptured a blood vessel in my brain because of high blood pressure.
I was lucky. My doctor won't let me return to work until another MRI is done and it is determined that my brain is healed. I was initially annoyed....I was worried about progress reports, IEPs....then he said...."You almost died."
I WAS LUCKY.

The blood pressure medicine seems to be doing its job. Here's the symptoms list, don't ignore any of them.

So thank you to Doodle Bugs Teaching for letting me have a place to share my story and my five for Friday!

NUMBER ONE

50 Easy Prep Low Carb Snack Ideas - These are so good you won't want to cheat!:

The doc also noticed my cholesterol was too high....so I am looking at ideas for low carbs. These look pretty yummy!

NUMBER TWO
Being in the hospital is a bummer, but when you have amazing friends and family it can be not so awful!

My wish "good health".

The melting pumpkin guy is pretty cool and is a great entertainment when you are stuck in a hospital bed.

Included an audio book! My vision still has spots so I was especially excited about that.
Look at that pretty afghan!

Number Three

One side effect is spots in my vision.
This was making it impossible to use the computer, the spots get worse in just a short time of trying to look at the screen, this is true with a book also. It is followed with a headache. This is thankfully getting better!
I experimented with changing the background color by inverting the colors on my iphone. This causes the ebook app to have a black background  with white font. Much easier on the eyes. My Kindle Fire has a text to speech option making anything I want be read aloud to me. Pretty cool. My biggest problem is that I am a mega visual learner and my mind tends to wonder when I'm listening instead of reading.
It reminded me of when tinted glasses and overlays were used to help with some reading difficulties. I found some binder dividers that fit my needs. After trying out the available colors, I found that blue and lavender were the best. I can cover my laptop screen or a book with one and be able to read for a while! yea!

NUMBER FOUR

It is SOONER Season!
Nice thing about being home so much, I'm seeing all the OU games!

NUMBER FIVE

HALLOWEEN!

Love this holiday and am sad that I am not at school with the kids who love it too.
However
I did get to help with a trick or treat hallway at a local high school.

Workbasket Wednesday Link Up!

This is my first try at linking with Autism Classroom's workbasket Wednesday....

I love these things...I call them tasks, some call them boxes...whatever the name...
they are AWESOME!

Here are some of my favorites....

The piece of Velcro is a modification for a student who had difficulty physically writing. He was shown 2-4 cards with numbers already written and chose which one matched the value of the coins.

Students who can read also need this strategy.
This was an easy one to pull together using ordinary objects around the classroom.
It is a great reading comprehension activity!

As a special education teacher for intensive need students, my students' needs change from year to year, I don't always have students who require this type of task.
However
I save them and use them for review with ALL kinds of learners...
and they love them!

They are priceless.

Thank you for coming by,

Five for Friday.........Composting at School

Our school has a garden that is planted by students,  cared for over the summer by local families and teachers....

There is this amazing teacher who started it....

Next, she started composting...this year she asked if my students would do the daily composting job....I thought it would be a good break for them from the drudgery of academics.

They learned the routine and are serious about it...they ask really good questions about  how it works (they had the amazing teacher for homeroom last year so they had some ideas).

The teacher assistant who walks them through it looks up mini videos about the different aspects of composting and shows them during their breaks....

I just followed them around one day and took pictures......

Each classroom teacher who was willing received a bucket next to the trashcan. When their class has lunch, the students are instructed to only place the fresh fruit or vegetables they didn't eat into the  bucket. (our students eat in their homerooms)

Our students pick up the first bucket and empty all the other bucket's contents into it, they have lids that are put in place after it is empty.

They empty it all into the compost station.

Beautiful!

I got the number cards from Doodle Bugs out --------the pumpkin shaped 5's and the Bat 10's!

These cards are a great resource!
Eight school days ago my math group counted by fives....badly.
Today they did it perfectly!
They counted and arranged the pumpkin cards in order almost every school day and ...

Presto!

It such a little thing that makes a BIG difference!

That's about all I got!
It is cooling off, leaves are turning yellow and red, and I need
to finish a class...like yesterday!
That's what I'll be doing this week-end.

Have a good one,

Paula
