Spring Time Bulletin Board

I am linking up with Doodle Bugs this week.

We just keep adding to our bulletin board! The warmer weather and the sunshine is motivating us.

We started with flowers.......

The "paint" is made from clear Karo syrup and food coloring! It is easier to brush on if the brushes are wet before dipping them into the paint, when it dries....it is shiny and NOT sticky....

Next, butterflies.......

Accordion fold the tissue paper and twist a pipe cleaner around the middle.

and caterpillars, of course.....

egg carton, paint, wiggly eyes and pipe cleaners

Put them altogether...

Five for Friday.....April 2, 2014

Thank goodness this week is at a close! It has been looonnnng......testing, seizures, spring fever, the kids are DONE...and therefore I am DONE. Now it is time to link up with Doodle Bugs for the Friday party!

We did an awesome project this week, it was part of our following directions lesson. Using the book, A Color of his Own, by Leo Lionni, we made a 3-D chameleon, the idea and directions can be found at the Artolozzi.blog. They loved it! One of my friends got very creative, adding a hat to his chameleon. Next, they wrote a sentence and drew a picture of their chameleon...My chameleon's name is _____.

Five for Friday....Gobble, Gobble!....ICE!

ONE

Today was a weird day, it began with freezing rain which turned into a major problem for bus drivers, it ended with cars encased in ice. However, we were toasty in our school building, we made 

turkeys!

Materials needed: feathers, liquid glue, paper plates, googly eyes, red, orange, yellow construction paper and a brown crayon.

Cut the paper plate in half......

Color the back of the plate with a brown crayon

TWO

Choose 12 feathers

Using liquid glue, run a thick line of glue from "x" to the next "x".

Place your feathers

THREE

Cut out the head/body piece 

Glue body onto plate and glue on Googly eyes.

FOUR

Cut out the wattle and glue it on the body.

Cut out the beak and glue it on top of the wattle.

Cut out the feet and glue onto the back of the body.

Awesome turkey!

Ice Cube Car.....

I thought this looked kind of neat...even while I struggled to get the door open....

I am home snug and warm now...and don't HAVE to leave it for two days, the roads should be covered with snow providing some traction by that time..

Ocean week

This week we are camping out in Seward, Alaska. We are focusing on sea life because Seward is located on the coast and  has a fantastic sea life center!

 

 

 

Book

 

The kids really loved this book! It  opened up lots of discussion, they were very excited about the sea life described in the book, especially the sharks. This led me to remember that I had a video of a shark tunnel from the Oklahoma Aquarium! So I brought it the next day to show them, they were mesmerized. Great fun.

 

As a follow up activity, they did a camp notebook activity which had them finish the sentence: "I see ___________________ under the waves." To finish they drew a picture to match the sentence.

Fishing for letters!

 

Before the students arrived, we taped all the letters around the room.

 

 

 

They walked around the classroom with the worksheet on their clipboard and dotted the letter when they found it. Some of the students could do this independently, some needed an assistant to help them find, name and dot each letter.

 

The fishing worksheet is from the camping unit I purchased from teachers pay teachers!

 

 

Making an Ocean Scene

 

The first day: painted a piece of paper blue covering completely. Sprinkle sand for the bottom of the ocean.

 

 

 

 

The second day: using lots of liquid glue, place the seaweed and fish.

 

 

 

Let dry for a day and display!

 

Materials we used: plastic greenery, goldfish crackers, glittery foam stickers, Swedish fish candy (yum).

 

 

Songs

 

 

The Octopus song was introduced, it is a well known tried and true preschool song, I was surprised to find that the kindergarten/first grade students hadn't heard it before. They loved it! It is the most requested song now.

 

 

It is also called the "slippery fish" song, I have the Charlotte Diamond version. There are lots of references to this song, including videos online.

 

This theme is extremely inspiring, we were reluctant to leave it and extended it for another week!

Building a cabin with cardboard

I want this to be the most fun summer school class ever! Following the "Camping around Alaska" theme, our centers will be things like tents and camp chairs. Instead of sitting at a typical calendar area, we will sit around the campfire!  With that in mind I started looking closer at this big TV box sitting around our back porch since November, we were reluctant to let go of it, we just knew it would come in handy. I got to thinking "Wouldn't it be cool to have a cabin as one of our centers", it could be just a "front" of a cabin, with a door they could crawl through. I didn't want to spend anymore money then absolutely needed.


To begin, light the mosquito coil so I won't get eaten alive on the back porch!

Materials: BIG box, brown paint, medium size brush, black paint or black marker, scrap wood.

Next, cut the box apart.  Paint it brown.   Let it dry.



I started applying the "logs" with black paint...didn't look right. Switched to a black marker...better. My hubby and I looked at it, didn't look all that "log like". Drew ovals in ....better, added "tree rings", even better!
I noticed that it was already developing a weak spot above the doorway, uh oh...will it last 5 weeks,(the length of summer school) maybe with some duct tape reinforcement? My hubby disappears awhile into his "shed", he returns with a piece of scrap wood, light weight, cuts it and viola! reinforced and attached with staple gun.

I think we can have some fun with this!
